Anthony points out that just because she is black, does not mean that she fails to see in stereotypes. He argues that she did not serve them because she assumed they would not tip well. By doing this, Anthony is just contributing to the cycle of discrimination. She decides not to serve him like everyone else, so he does not tip her. She is then proven right in her assumption and the cycle continues. Then a white man and woman the Los Angeles District Attorney and his wife walk past them in the street, and as soon as the woman sees the two black men her arm almost automatically clings to the side of her husband. They then pull out their firearms and approach the couple, robbing them of their SUV at gunpoint. By acting the way they did they proved the woman correct in her assumption.

Race, stereotypes, oppression, and marginalization played a major part in the reaction of the individuals in the movie, as it still exists today. Many will say that times have changed and things have become better since the days of slavery, but I cannot agree that this statement is true. For example, Mrs. Cabot assumed that Daniel, the locksmith was a thug since his head was shaved, tattoos, and pants sagging, referring to him as Amigo. Because of her cultural stereotype she asked her husband to have the door locks changed because she felt he would give the keys to guys on the street to come back and rob them. Cabot used Daniel as her scapegoat for her anger towards Anthony and Peter, who robbed her earlier that night. Earlier in the movie, Mrs. Cabot exemplified fear and stereotype of the men when she initially recognized them walking down the street. Anthony and Peter were appropriately dressed as college. Because we care about the characters, the movie is uncanny in its ability to rope us in and get us involved. It connects stories based on coincidence, serendipity, and luck, as the lives of the characters crash against one another other like pinballs.

The movie presumes that most people feel prejudice and resentment against members of other groups, and observes the consequences of those feelings. One thing that happens, again and again, is that peoples' assumptions prevent them from seeing the actual person standing before them. An Iranian Shaun Toub is thought to be an Arab, although Iranians are Persian. Both the Iranian and the white wife of the district attorney Sandra Bullock believe a Mexican-American locksmith Michael Pena is a gang member and a crook, but he is a family man. A black cop Don Cheadle is having an affair with his Latina partner Jennifer Esposito , but never gets it straight which country she's from.

A cop Matt Dillon thinks a light-skinned black woman Thandie Newton is white. When a white producer tells a black TV director Terrence Dashon Howard that a black character "doesn't sound black enough," it never occurs to him that the director doesn't "sound black," either. For that matter, neither do two young black men Larenz Tate and Ludacris , who dress and act like college students, but have a surprise for us. You see how it goes. Along the way, these people say exactly what they are thinking, without the filters of political correctness. The district attorney's wife is so frightened by a street encounter that she has the locks changed, then assumes the locksmith will be back with his "homies" to attack them.

The white cop can't get medical care for his dying father, and accuses a black woman at his HMO with taking advantage of preferential racial treatment. The Iranian can't understand what the locksmith is trying to tell him, freaks out, and buys a gun to protect himself. The gun dealer and the Iranian get into a shouting match. I make this sound almost like episodic TV, but Haggis writes with such directness and such a good ear for everyday speech that the characters seem real and plausible after only a few words. His cast is uniformly strong; the actors sidestep cliches and make their characters particular.

For me, the strongest performance is by Matt Dillon, as the racist cop in anguish over his father. He makes an unnecessary traffic stop when he thinks he sees the black TV director and his light-skinned wife doing something they really shouldn't be doing at the same time they're driving. True enough, but he wouldn't have stopped a black couple or a white couple. He humiliates the woman with an invasive body search, while her husband is forced to stand by powerless, because the cops have the guns -- Dillon, and also an unseasoned rookie Ryan Phillippe , who hates what he's seeing but has to back up his partner.

That traffic stop shows Dillon's cop as vile and hateful. But later we see him trying to care for his sick father, and we understand why he explodes at the HMO worker whose race is only an excuse for his anger.

criminals in Rang de Basanti? I do not wholly agree with the message screened in Rang De Basanti. The movie, for all its comedy, drama and performances of the actors, suggests a very dangerous breed of patriotism. Indeed, what the minister said and did in the movie was unbecoming and wrong, and undeniably, the movie gives a very strong base message that the youth should make an effort to right the wrongs , however what Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra shows in the movie is drastic to say the least. Vis-à-vis the content of the films story, the essay will mention how, on a thematic level, these films each rely heavily on the use of violence to delineate its message and intentions. James Kendrick states that the use of violence in a film is employed as a structuring device and it is evident that each of these films uses violence for differing intentions, of which the essay will later make discernible. Subsequently, the essay will contrast the order in which the stories are presented to the viewer, chiefly, regarding how Amores Perros uses a non-linear structure while Los Bastardos and El Espinazo del Diablo use a linear structure. Finally, the ending of the films will be discussed. These films are all open ended and are open to interpretation from the As a thrill seeker, I am a big fan of the horror author, Stephen King.

So naturally, when I heard our class would be doing an essay on a book and its movie, I knew instantaneously that I wanted to read a publication by him. Without telling our legs to carry us over close enough for our arms to bring our hands to tidy up. We all do it. The film is attempting to portray the current social structure of race, social class, and gender in Los Angeles. Metaphorically speaking, the narrative of the film can be compared to the Domino Effect. The first scene opens with Detective Graham Walters speaking. He is a black man portrayed by Don Cheadle. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people; people bump into you After watching the movie, Crash, I found it fairly difficult to analyze just one of the topics discussed in class. In many instances, race, class, gender and sexuality seem to intersect in our daily lives more often than we as in one individual may realize. It is important that we pay attention to this as we begin to form our opinions of people and situations. I have found that stereotypes are often the foundation for our beliefs and fears; however, there are always unknown factors that contribute to the formation of these stereotypes. As Crash opens, a black man, Detective Graham Waters, speaks about the nature of Los Angeles and the need for people to crash into each other.

You brush past people, people bump into you. We're always behind this metal and glass. This was a great quote for me as I took the word crash as a metaphor for intersectionality. The metal and glass symbolize a shield or façade an individual has up. This is what you see day to day when you are simply looking at someone.
